Short answer

Make your business easy for AI tools to trust: the same facts everywhere, a website that answers real questions, and steady reviews and mentions on other sites. Then check what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI say, and fix what is missing.

There is no form to fill in and no ad to buy. AI tools recommend the businesses the web agrees on. Here is how that works, what it looks like for real clients, and the steps that get you there.

Key takeaways

  • You can’t buy a ChatGPT recommendation; it is earned from what the web says about you.
  • Make your name, address, phone, hours and services match everywhere.
  • Answer real questions on your site, with the answer first.
  • Steady reviews and local mentions give AI tools something to quote.

Chapter 01Where answers come from

Where do AI answers about businesses come from?

AI tools build each answer when someone asks, from what the web says about your business.

There is no list to sign up for. When a customer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI for the best shop in town, the tool searches, reads what it finds and names the businesses it trusts most. OpenAI has not published exactly how it chooses, but studies by local search firms keep finding the same four sources behind the answers.

  • Your website

What you do, where, and what it costs, written in plain words the tools can quote.

  • Your Google Business Profile

Hours, category, photos and reviews. Answers about local businesses often show its rating.

  • Reviews

Google, Yelp, Facebook and the review sites for your trade, recent and detailed.

  • Listings and local lists

Bing Places, Apple Maps, directories, “best of” lists and local news.

Customers now find you three ways, and each one builds on the one before it.

Chapter 02Real AI answers

What does it look like when AI recommends you?

Like this: real questions, real answers, naming real clients.

We asked ChatGPT the questions our clients' customers ask and captured the answers on a phone, with the date and the exact question. Each business had a full search and AI answer update first.

These are the answers we saw on the dates shown. AI answers change, and nobody can promise a spot in them.

Chapter 03Check where you stand

How do you check what AI says about you today?

Ask the questions your customers ask, the way they ask them, and write down who gets named.

It takes about fifteen minutes and shows you exactly where you stand, and which competitors the tools prefer today.

  1. 1List five real questions

The way customers ask: "best [service] in [city]", "who does [service] near me", "[service] open now".

  2. 2Open a private window

Signed out, so past chats and your location history don't sway the answer.

  3. 3Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google

The same questions in each. Google shows its AI Overview above the results for many questions.

  4. 4Write down who is named

Which businesses, what each answer says about them, and which sites it quotes.

  5. 5Check again every month

Answers change. Keep the date and the exact question with every check.

Ask like a customer, not like a business owner. "Best bob haircut in Sacramento" is a real question. "Precision cutting specialist" is not.

Chapter 04Match your details

Why do your business details need to match everywhere?

Because AI tools trust facts they see repeated the same way across the web.

If your hours say one thing on Google and another on Yelp, an AI tool can't tell which is true, so it may leave you out or repeat the wrong one. This is what we usually find before we start:

A typical before

The same business, five places, five stories

WebsiteGoogleYelpFacebookInstagram
Business name!
Address!!
Phone
Hours!!โ€“
Categoryโ€“!โ€“
Description!!
Website linkโ€“!

Matches ! Doesn't match โ€“ Missing

Make these match on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook and Instagram:

  • Business name, exactly as it appears on your sign, with no extra keywords.
  • Address, written the same way every time.
  • Phone, one main number.
  • Hours, including holidays.
  • Main category, the closest match to what you do.
  • Services and prices, the same names and starting prices.
  • Website link, pointing to the right page.

Chapter 05Answer on your site

How should your website answer questions?

Put the question in the heading and the answer in the first sentence under it.

Google's answer box, its AI Overviews and AI tools lift short, direct answers. A page that hides the answer three paragraphs down gets passed over, however good it is.

A typical pageAnswer first
HeadingOur ServicesHow much does a haircut cost at Salon Bravissimo?
First lineWelcome! We have been passionate about hair for years. These are starting prices from our menu, then the prices.
Below itMore paragraphs about the teamThe next questions customers ask, each answered
Behind the scenesNothingSearch data with the prices, so Google and AI tools read them directly
Salon Bravissimo's haircut price article: the question is the heading, the answer comes first, the next questions are answered below
A real example: Salon Bravissimo's haircut article, one of eleven answer-first articles written from the salon's own menu
  • One page per service, so each question has a clear home.
  • An FAQ with the questions customers really ask.
  • Prices, hours and areas you serve in plain text, not only in pictures or PDFs.
  • Search data that tells Google what the page covers: the business, the services and the FAQ.

Chapter 06Reviews and mentions

How do reviews and mentions help?

They give AI tools something to quote, from someone other than you.

Answers about local businesses often show the star rating and review count from the business's Google profile. A steady stream of recent, detailed reviews shows the tool you are active and trusted. Mentions on local lists, news sites and trade directories add proof you can't write yourself.

  • Ask every happy customer

Send a short review link right after the job, while it is fresh.

  • Reply to every review

Good and bad, by name and calmly. It shows you are there.

  • Get on the lists that matter

Local “best of” lists, your chamber of commerce and the directories for your trade.

  • Show proof on your site

Real results with real names, shared with permission.

AI tools repeat what the web agrees on.

Chapter 07What doesn't work

What doesn't work?

You can't buy a ChatGPT recommendation, and shortcuts don't last.

Be wary of anyone who promises you a spot in ChatGPT. Nobody controls those answers. What you can control is how clear, consistent and trusted your business looks everywhere the tools read.

Doesn't workWorks
Paying for a "guaranteed" AI rankingFixing your real profiles and pages
Calling yourself "the best" on your own siteReviews and lists where others say it
Stuffing keywords into your business nameYour real name, the same everywhere (keyword names also break Google's rules)
Hundreds of thin pages written by AIA few thorough pages that answer real questions

Chapter 08Time and cost

How long does it take and what does it cost?

Most small business sites take 10 to 20 hours of work, done in 2 to 3 days from the start.

That covers the research, a full review of your site and profiles, a plan you approve, and the fixes. Every updated page then goes to Google Search Console to be crawled again right away. Results show up over the following weeks, and we measure what changed for up to 90 days. There is no monthly contract.

It is billed by the hour at the same rates as every project: $75 an hour, or $55 and $40 an hour with a prepaid 10โ€‘hour or 20โ€‘hour block.

Updated

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No one can sell you a spot in ChatGPT’s answers. Be wary of anyone who guarantees one. What you can do is make your business easy to trust everywhere the tools look.

Does this also work for Google’s AI Overviews?

Yes. The same work helps both: clear answers on your site, a complete Google Business Profile and steady reviews. AI Overviews also lean on pages that already do well in Google.

How long until AI tools recommend my business?

There is no fixed timeline. The fixes are usually done in 2 to 3 days, updated pages go to Google to be crawled right away, and we measure what changed over the following weeks, up to 90 days.

Do I need a Google Business Profile?

If customers visit you or you serve a local area, yes. Answers about local businesses often show details and ratings from Google profiles, and a complete profile is one of the strongest signals you control.

Is AEO different from SEO?

AEO builds on SEO. SEO helps your pages rank. AEO shapes them to give the direct answer, with question headings, answers first and FAQ data. AI recommendations build on both.

What if AI says something wrong about my business?

Find where the wrong fact comes from, usually an old listing or profile, and correct it there. Then make sure your own site states the right fact clearly. The answers follow as the sources change.
